Women in hand to hand combat in the army. Beneficial or risky?

Updated: Feb 21, 2020

Before writing this article, I would like to say that this is just my opinion. I have no intention to harm, besmirch or hurt the feelings, respect or dignity of any person from any community whatsoever. I am writing this blog just to express my opinions and to help the society by providing my views.

The big news which is happening right now is the inclusion of women for senior command posts and hand to hand combat situations in the army. The women feel that they too have a right to go to war and engage just like the men as well as a right to be recommended for higher command posts with full service. Right now the women are given only half service of 7 years and then asked to retire. So they are now asking to be given the same opportunity as the men. In my personal opinion, I would not agree with this. I have three big reasons to believe this opinion of mine.

Firstly, physical strength. There is no doubt that when it comes to brain power, a woman definitely holds the advantage on an average. But when it comes to brute, pure physical strength, the advantage belongs to the male. In a situation like war, the brain power does play a crucial part in deciding what the outcome of the clash will be. But without the adequate amount of muscle power to back that intelligence, the chances of triumph does decrease. Nevertheless, there are some women who have the equal and sometimes even more fight capacity than the men but on an average, it can't be said that such a phenomenon occurs on a consistent basis.

Secondly, the threat of being captured and the torture. When an army officer is kidnapped, taken hostage or tortured for information, he remains resilient and refuses. Hence, he is tortured in many brutal ways. He is beaten, hammered, intoxicated, stabbed with broken glass in the back side, left hungry for days and even killed. But if there were a woman in this situation, the level of brutality can be even more. She can be sexually molested, harassed and even sexually attacked. And with a threat like that unbelievably high in the cities, it is safe to say that in the battlefield, it will be even higher are fiercer. And I would not want any woman to go through such a painful experience.

Thirdly, the sustainability of war-like fitness. Men and women soldiers, both have shown that they have the ability to enter combat situations and emerge victorious. But can a woman sustain the same amount of intensity as the men for the same long time? I wouldn't know about this a lot but from what I have seen, women mostly lose some metabolism and strength post a particular age. It is unfair to think that this is one of the reasons as age is just a number but with the nation's security on the line, eyebrows will be raised.

This does not take away the fact that women are indeed more than capable to defend a nation and picking up a weapon. Women have proved that they can take on difficult situations and grave dangers with no fear or disgrace. At this point, we can only make assumptions. But if we were to reach a solution, the most appropriate way is to give them an opportunity. As in a test for women to prove that they are no lesser than the men. The same tests, same targets, same difficulty level for both genders during the army evaluations can help us come up with a more exact solution. But if the women turn out to be that good, it will be beneficial for both the nation and her interests. And maybe we too, like Russia, America, can have brave lady officers and male officers standing on our walls with weapons. A dream that can be a boon.
