Kiwis strike back as Indians taste defeat for the first time in the series.

Updated: Feb 8, 2020

All good things come to an end, even with cricket. India today experienced this as they lost the first of the 3 match Odis against New Zealand. This happened right after they whitewashed the kiwis in the 5 match T20 series.

After winning the toss and electing to bowl, New Zealand faced the likes of Mayank Agarwal and Prithvi Shaw as the 2 young stars of IPL made their ODI debut. The openers got off to a good start by posting 50 runs for the opening partnership. But they were removed in quick succession which was then followed by a 100 run stand between Kohli and Iyer. While Kohli unfortunately got out to Ish Sodhi after scoring his 50, Iyer carried on and scored his 100 with KL Rahul scoring a quick fire half century at the other end. After Iyer departed, India's finishing blows were provided by Kedar Jadhav which took India to 347 after 50 overs.

The Kiwis however chased this target with complete ease with the help of Ross Taylor who scored a century and Stand in captain Tom Latham and Henry Nicholls both registering half centuries. This took New Zealand to the target with 11 balls and 4 wickets in hand.

For NZ, Cdg was the pick of the bowlers with 1-41 in 8 overs while Southee picked up 2 wickets but conceded 85 runs in his full quota of 10 overs. India had a similar kind of spell with Kuldeep Yadav(2-84 in 10 overs). Bumrah was the standout with 1-53 in 10 overs.

So India have encountered their first loss in this big series and with 2 more games left to be played in Auckland and Mount Maunganui, they will look to win both with a relatively new squad. With both Rohit and Shikhar undergoing maintenance for their injuries, Shaw and Agarwal will have their hands full as they will be under pressure to win both remaining games. And with Hardik Pandya not battle ready yet, Kedar Jadhav and Manish Pandey will have to take out the swords and look to do some real death overs damage. The newly groomed SN Thakur will have the support of the experienced Jasprit Bumrah at the other end along with Mohammed Shami. But with Kuldeep Yadav not having a great time with his economy rate, questions rise if Yuz Chahal will be called upon to support him or maybe replace him in the next ODI. But KL Rahul and Kohli have looked solid and they will be looking to continue their purple patch.

India(probable XI): Prithvi Shaw, Mayank Agarwal, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul(wk), Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, Shardul Thakur.
